Giovanni Comelli is full professor of Physics of the Matter at the University of Trieste, where since 2018 he serves as the Director of the Physics Department.

His main research interests concern the experimental investigation of low dimensional materials, using both standard and synchrotron-radiation-based surface science techniques, often collaborating with theoretical groups for a thorough interpretation of the experimental results on the basis of ab initio calculations.

He was involved since the very beginning in the development of the Elettra Synchrotron Radiation Laboratory in Trieste, holding the office of Vice President of Elettra – Sincrotrone Trieste S.C.p.A. from 2004 to 2014.

In recent years he concentrated his activities in the application of scanning tunneling microscopy to real time investigation of surface processes with atomic resolution, contributing to the development of a fast module (patented), which increases by a factor of ~1000 the image acquisition capabilities of commercial STM instruments.

He is author of more than 200 scientific papers published in international refereed journals.

He is involved in several committees, at the national and international level, for the evaluation of scientific proposals and programmes.
